Keeping it Real...The following has always been and will continue to be the philosophy of New Moon Farm.
Since its birth 10 years ago, New Moon Farm has always worked hard
to promote the concepts of biodiversity, sustainable farming practices and a
healthful, natural lifestyle for all. Everything we have ever done has been firmly rooted in the rhythm of life.
To be aware of all
aspects of one's life is paramount to peace and happiness. Believing that everything is connected
in some way and every action has a consequence, good or bad, has always been our strongest guiding principle.
No less important is a strong belief in seeking harmony in everything around us. Striving to maintain the natural habitats and riparian
areas, establishing habitat to encourage birds, insects, animals and other native species to
grow and flourish are all important duties of any organic grower. Instead of fighting to conquer the natural elements all around us, seeking to find that balance
which allows us to live in accord with them is paramount to success. These simple but powerful ideas are the foundation on which
New Moon Farm was originally built and that have touched everything we accomplished over the last 10 years, both in relation to the farm and in our daily lives. These
concepts are what inspire us to do what we do...grow the freshest, healthiest, safest food we possibly can, for
ourselves and our customers.
New Moon Farm has always aspired to promote not only a peaceful,
healthful, natural lifestyle for ourselves and others. We also employ many of the tenets of simple living. By producing
as many of our needs as possible and practicing voluntary simplicity wherever possible, we can limit our dependence on other sources for our
comforts and necessities. Sustainability is key not only to
farming methods, but to daily life.
New Moon Farm believes strongly in the concept and principles of
organic methods employed in sync with biodynamic principles to yield an even broader and more natural approach to growing for the
health and sustainability.
One of our specialties has always been the many and varied heirloom varieties we grow. Preserving the diversity of food
plants is extremely important to us. The bioethics of genetically altered seeds is having a negative impact
on our food supply in the U.S. because many transgenic varieties are being allowed to pollute non-GMO crops.
More and more seed suppliers are finding genetic contamination in their non-GMO seeds when testing. Without
growers like New Moon Farm, growing and preserving older and more diverse varieties of food plants, many of
them would eventually be lost forever.
Another fascinating aspect of growing heirlooms is that these "antique" vegetables and flowers are literally a living historical link to our past. Many of the heirlooms we grow have their origins
within the cultures that brought them to America during the settling of this country.
Some of them are even indigenous species that grew wild in our region and were harvested by the native people
who populated this area before the Europeans settled here.
This aspect of what we do is something that is both intriguing and exciting.
Not only are we able to grow our own food, we are able to make a tangible connection between the past and present.
We believe that eating locally grown produce, in season, is
one of the best ways to provide optimum nutrition and to feed both the body as well as the spirit.
